Teacher Spotlight – Sherie Malta

Elementary Teacher Spotlight for April 2016

Elementary Teacher Spotlight for April 2016

Cedarwood School is proud to announce Sherie Malta as our Elementary Teacher Spotlight for April!
Sherie has her Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education from Northwestern State University. She has 19 years of experience as a classroom teacher and has taught 17 of those at Cedarwood School. She also has been the yearbook advisor for the past 9 years.

“I believe that each child is a unique individual who needs a secure, caring and stimulating environment in which to grow and learn.”

Sherie was teaching in her hometown of Monroe, when she decided to move closer to her older sister that, at the time, was living in Covington, LA. Sherie inquired about schools in the area and her sister torn out a page in the phone book and mailed it to her! She made some calls and set up some interviews with multiple schools, but the minute she walked into the doors of Cedarwood, she knew it was the place she wanted to be.

“It was colorful and cheerful. The kids all looked like they were enjoying themselves. The faculty and staff were so friendly and welcoming. I was so excited when I was offered the job.”

Sherie believes in first providing a secure, caring, and stimulating environment so that each unique learner can be successful. Building a sense of community in the classroom and promoting positive relationships among students and teachers is so important. She strives to help students develop independent thinking and problem-solving skills that will be used throughout their lives in and out of the classroom. Her favorite thing about Cedarwood is that it is small and has a family-like atmosphere. She loves being able to get to know all of the students at the school and not just the ones that are in her class.

One thing she would like the community and future Cedarwood parents to know is that “Cedarwood is truly a community. Everyone on the faculty and staff works together to help our students be the best they can be. Students are encouraged to be themselves and to celebrate our differences.”

Sherie has two sisters and one of them is a teacher as well. She is a proud Aunt to an amazing 11-year-old nephew named A.J. and also a God mother to her best friend’s son, Nate. She is an animal lover and has many pets, including a husky named Beau, a bearded dragon named Rex, and several box turtles
