Google will be visiting Cedarwood School on Monday, December 7, 2015. Cedarwood School was selected to participate in an unparalleled learning opportunity sponsored by the Google Expeditions Pioneer Program. Cedarwood students in 2nd through 7th grades will participate in the Google Expeditions Pioneer Program.
Expeditions is a new product that allows teachers to take their classes on virtual field trips, immersing students in experiences that bring abstract concepts to life and give students a deeper understanding go the world beyond the class room.
“Cedarwood School offers an emphasis in STEM education so this unique opportunity being offered by Google to our students is a perfect match for enhancing the learning experiences for our culturally diverse student population”, says Principal Kathy LeBlanc.
On Monday, December 7th the Google Expeditions Pioneer Program vehicle will arrive at Cedarwood. The Expedition Team will provide cardboard viewers and phones for every student and a tablet for the teacher to use with the virtual reality field trip.
“The virtual reality panoramas will focus on countries that students are learning about in conjunction with Cedarwood’s upcoming 17th Annual International Festival held in January”, says Computer Technology teacher, Alison Statton. Second grade students will visit Angel Falls in Venezuela, third grade students will view volcanoes in Iceland, fourth grade students will travel to the Parthenon in Greece, fifth grade will tour the Pyramids, sixth grade will visit the wild chimpanzees in Gombe National Park, and seventh grade will take a tour around Red Square in Moscow.
These trips are collections of virtual reality panoramas – 360 degree photo spheres, 3D images and video, ambient sounds – annotated with details, points of interest, and questions that make them easy to integrate into curriculum.
